Media Release 5 July 2026

The 4th July 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the monumental United States Declaration of Independence. The United States of America is the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Today Right to Life applauds the American pro-life movement and the citizens of the United States for their tireless pursuit of justice and for legal protection for the lives of the unborn and for the vulnerable. We especially applaud the United States Supreme Court which in 2022 after 49 years overthrew the egregiously unjust and unconstitutional “Roe v. Wade” decision which allowed for the killing of nearly 44 million unborn children in abortions, and the spiritual, physical and psychological wounding of their mothers.

On this historic day the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The document was founded on the core premise that all human beings possess an inalienable right to life, that was bestowed on us at conception by our Creator.

This epic anniversary provides inspiration and encouragement for the pro-life movement in New Zealand, which seeks to provide effective legal protection for the life of every human being from conception to natural death.

The U.S. Declaration of Independence states that rights are not granted by governments, but are conferred by our Creator to uphold our intrinsic dignity as human beings and children of God.

Our human rights are not conferred by the State. Our rights are also inalienable, which means that they may not be taken away by the State, nor may we give them up.

The First Right: The right to life from conception is explicitly listed in the Constitution, before liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The US Constitution gives recognition to God as the author of life, for this America has been blessed by God. It is tragic that while our Parliament gives recognition to God’s dominion over us in prayer at the beginning of each sitting day, our legislation studiously ignores Him.

The pro-life and family movement in New Zealand can be inspired and be encouraged by our friends in the United States to continue to vigorously advocate for our Parliament and government to recognise that our human rights do not come from the State, and that is their duty to recognise that our human rights come from God and that it is their duty to protect our human rights.

It is also the duty of our Parliament to legislate to recognise the status of the unborn child as a human being, from conception and endowed by their Creator with an inalienable right to life, and to protect the right to life of the unborn children, God’s precious infants, and to repeal the extremist Abortion Legislation Act 2020.
