Media Release 25 September 2026

Right to Life believes that the secretary General of the United Nations should recognise that every human being is an unrepeatable miracle of God’s loving creation deserving of love and respect.

Michelle Bachelet was the front runner and most favoured for election, as the Secretary General of the United Nations. She is a radical feminist and socialist, former president of Chile, who promised to make abortion an international human right, has been forced to withdraw from the race for UN Secretary-General.

The Security Council, in its third straw poll, delivered her crushing defeat when 11 countries voted to discourage her candidacy, with only one country supporting her out of 15 member countries. In the face of this collapse of support, and this humiliating rejection, she withdrew her candidacy for the office of Secretary General of the United Nations on Saturday 19th September.

Bachelet had pledged to pressure countries to have the killing of unborn children decriminalised up to birth. It was to be no longer a crime to kill a defenceless unborn child, who did not become a human being until it was born.

She had the support of powerful feminist organisations and globalists. She was defeated because she was opposed by the international pro-life movement. We had a petition opposing her appointment signed by 300,000 pro-life supporters that was presented to the Security Council of the United Nations.

UN Watch had conducted a vigorous campaign to oppose the appointment of Bachelet, who had previously been the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and had failed to condemn appalling human rights abuses and crimes against humanity in North Korea, Turkey, Cuba and the genocide inflicted by the Chinese Communist Party regime against the Uighur population.

Right to Life believes that the international pro-life movement must remain vigilant, to ensure that the next Secretary-General of the United Nations actively supports the right to life of every human being, from conception to natural death, and upholds marriage as exclusively comprising one man and one woman.
