Media Release 19 December 2025

The Ministry of Health reveals in its report on abortion statistics for 2024 that 11,392 unborn children were killed in their mother’s womb in early medical abortions during the first 10 weeks of their life; this is 67% of the 17,785 abortions reported in 2024.

Right to Life weeps with God for His precious infants lost and for their precious mothers grievously wounded.

Right to Life is appalled that the government has now pressured the noble profession of pharmacy, hitherto commendably dedicated to protecting the life and health of patients, to now become abortion providers and potential serial killers.

Pharmacists have a legal right to refuse to sell abortion drugs that will kill a child in the womb. It is tragic that these children were poisoned to death by the lethal abortion drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol provided by pharmacists, who were prepared to sell these lethal drugs on prescription.

Right to Life believes that these pharmacists were acting in violation of the fifth commandment of God,” thou shalt not kill.”

The ethics of the pharmacy profession are policed by the Pharmacy Council. The first principle of the code of ethics is to “Make the health and well-being of the patient your first priority.”

The unborn child is a patient and is the weakest and most defenceless member of the human family. Right to Life believes that pharmacists have a special responsibility to protect the lives of unborn children.

Right to Life applauds those pharmacists who following an informed conscience uphold the fifth commandment of God not to kill and refuse to sell these lethal drugs.

Right to Life calls upon the Pharmacy Council, responsible for the registration of pharmacists, and for their compliance with the ethics of the profession, to direct pharmacists to protect the lives and health of their patients from conception to natural death, which includes the unborn child.

Right to Life is pleased that the Council permits pharmacists on conscience grounds to refuse to sell the abortion drugs. We are however disappointed that the Council directs that these pharmacists find another pharmacist who is prepared to supply these lethal drugs to kill an unborn child. This is a gross violation of conscience and human rights.

Right to Life is currently conducting a campaign of writing to the 1,100 pharmacies in New Zealand encouraging their staff to uphold the God given right to life of the unborn and their medical ethics, by refusing to fill prescriptions for the abortion drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Please support this campaign by encouraging your pharmacist to refuse to sell abortion drugs.
