Media Release 30 June 2025
The Abortion Pill Rescue Network announced this month that the Abortion Pill Reversal Protocol has achieved a new record with 7,000 unborn children saved and mothers spared from the effects of chemical abortion internationally since 2012. Right to Life rejoices with the 7,000 mothers who have courageously stopped their early medical abortions and who have chosen life for their precious children.
These births are vigorously opposed by the N.Z. Ministry of Health, the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. These professional bodies all support the “right” of women to kill their children before they are born. They promote abortion as a health service which is safe and not harmful to the health of the mother. They believe that to stop and reverse a medical abortion with Progesterone in the Abortion Reversal Protocol is unlawful, unethical, unsafe and ineffective. They refuse to accept that the birth of 7,000 babies is proof that the protocol is safe and effective.
Right to Life believes that the Ministry of Health and these other professional bodies, which should be at the forefront in defending life, are now committed to a culture of death and are embarrassed and angered by women changing their minds, wishing to stop the killing of their child in an early medical abortion.
More than 60% of abortions in New Zealand are early medical abortions. The Ministry claims that it is an effective form of “abortion care” for a pregnancy under ten weeks’ gestation. The first drug is Mifepristone which blocks Progesterone in the woman’s system, starving her unborn babyof nutrients. The second drug, Misoprostol is a prostaglandin taken a day later, causing the mother to go into labour and to deliver her presumably dead child.
The Abortion Pill Rescue Network is experiencing a significant increase in the number of women seeking to reverse their chemical abortions. Monthly inquiries to the APRN for Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) have been up by more than 20% in recent months.
The abortion industry has tried to malign APR, with the help of the media, claiming that reversal of chemical abortion is junk science or even dangerous, the claims lacking evidence or coming with doubtful substantiation from parties with ties to the abortion industry or with abortion drug manufacturers.
With no prior warning, Meta (Facebook) had previously taken down the Abortion Pill Reversal page, claiming it was a violation of its community standards. Facebook also removed a post by Heartbeat, sharing an APR mother’s story, with an unaccountable third-party fact checker as their justification. Google also removed ads promoting the Abortion Pill Reversal hotline, citing a report from a pro-abortion group that had false information.
APR is an updated application of a treatment used for decades to combat miscarriage. It involves prescribing Progesterone to counter the effects of Mifepristone, the first of two drugs in a chemical abortion.
Right to Life is concerned that the 11,285 women who sought an early medical abortion in NZ in 2024 (provisional total) , were not advised that they had a right to discontinue the procedure after taking Mifepristone, before taking the second abortion drug Misoprostol.
Right to Life will not rest until the Ministry of Health recognises that women have a right to stop and reverse a medical abortion, after taking Mifepristone and before taking Misoprostol.
