Media Release 17 June 2026

Christopher Hipkins announced on Tuesday 16 June, that if Labour is elected at the next election to govern New Zealand, it would provide free pregnancy scans as part of the Medicard scheme commencing in July 2028.

Why is The Right Hon. Christopher Hipkins hiding the truth, that included in this announcement are free pregnancy scans for women who are seeking an abortion, who want to know the gestational age of their baby or an assurance that they do not have an ectopic pregnancy?

Those who govern us, who cannot be trusted to protect our precious unborn children, should not be trusted to govern the born.

Christopher Hipkins stated on Tuesday to the media “Women and their families shouldn't have to worry about money when it comes to making sure they and their babies are okay," He would have us believe that he is concerned about women and their precious unborn.

Right to Life questions Chris Hipkins touching display of concern for the welfare of mothers and their precious unborn children. He has failed to disclose the truth that he is also promising to provide free scans for the nearly 9000 women each year who are seeking to have their unborn child killed, who will be required to have an antenatal scan.

Women who have a scan as part of the abortion process, are not seeking confirmation that their baby is all right, but as a prelude to having their unborn baby poisoned, scraped out of their womb, or violently dismembered, authorised and funded by the State as a “health service.” This is not a health service.

Right to Life applauds and supports the promise of free pregnancy scans for the objective of protecting the mother’s health, and the life of the unborn child. We do not support and vigorously oppose free pregnancy scans which facilitate the murder of the child and the war on women.

It is believed that nearly half the abortions performed in New Zealand require a scan before the abortion, to confirm the gestational age of the child or to ensure that it is not an ectopic pregnancy. It is believed that a Labour government would budget for an estimated $450,000 to $1.5 million per year for abortion related scans.

• Right to Life reminds the community that Christopher Hipkins is an ardent advocate for the culture of death.

• He voted for passing the extremist Abortion Legislation Act in 2020 that effectively allowed for the killing of the child for any reason up to birth.

• He believes the fiction that unborn children are not human beings endowed by their Creator with a right to life until they are born.

• He believes that it is not a crime to kill an unborn child and that every woman has the right to kill her children before they are born.

• He voted against the four amendments to the Abortion Legislation Act in 2020 that would have provided increased protection for the lives of mothers and their unborn.

• He claims to support the rights of women but denies that women have a right to be born.

Right to Life believes that Christopher Hipkins has forfeited his right to sit in our Parliament for failing to protect women and unborn children from the violence of abortion.

Right to Life is alarmed that recent polls reveal that he has substantial support for his election as Prime Minister at the next general election.
