Right to Life New Zealand applauds the recent rededication of the United States as “one nation under God". At a time of growing social division and moral uncertainty, Right to Life believes that New Zealand too stands in urgent need of God’s protection and guidance.
On 17 May, thousands gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The ceremony celebrated the nation’s historic acknowledgement of God’s providence and gave thanks for the many occasions in which divine guidance and protection have shaped American history.
New Zealand, like the United States, was founded upon strong Judaeo-Christian foundations. Since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, our nation has been richly blessed and protected. For 186 years, faith in God and the values derived from the Christian tradition have played a central role in shaping our laws, institutions, and understanding of human dignity.
Today, however, our nation faces profound moral and social challenges. Violence against women continues to increase, unborn children remain denied the most basic human right — the right to life — and the natural family founded on the union of one man and one woman faces continuing attack and redefinition. At such a time, New Zealand should not turn away from its spiritual heritage but rather renew its commitment to the values upon which our nation was built.
Right to Life respectfully calls upon the government to follow the example recently demonstrated in the United States by formally recognising and celebrating New Zealand as one nation under God. Such a rededication would acknowledge our dependence upon our Creator, express gratitude for His enduring protection, and seek His blessing for future generations.
