Parliament is bitterly divided on voting to recognise human biology!

Media Release Saturday 23 May 2026

Following a contentious and angry debate on the first reading of the [Definitions of Woman and Man] Amendment Bill, the bill was passed during the evening of Wednesday, 20 May, 67 to 55 and referred to the Justice select committee to consider and receive submissions from the public.

Right to Life applauds the Private Member’s Bill of Jenny Marcroft MP of New Zealand First. This was not a conscience vote and was supported with a party vote by National, ACT and NZ First MPs. The bill was opposed with a party vote by Labour, Greens and Maori Party MPs.

Right to Life fully supports this bill, which will ensure clarity and consistency in New Zealand legislation by defining "woman" as an adult biological female and "man" as an adult human biological male. The Bill will protect sex-based rights and ensure the privacy and safety of women and girls in changing rooms, toilets, women’s sports and prisons.

Right to Life encourages concerned citizens to make submissions to the Justice Select Committee in support of this important bill.

Right to Life encourages the NZ First Party to pursue human rights and to now submit a bill that will recognise the unborn child as biologically a human being from conception and endowed by its Creator with an inalienable right to life.

The opposing parties fiercely condemned the bill in the debate. The Green Party labelled the bill "despicable", Labour called it a "pointless" distraction, and Te Pāti Māori described it as the "legislative erasure of trans people".

Right to Life believes that this bill will provide much-needed clarity and legal protection for women in the war against women which seeks to deny the role of women in God’s plan for procreation in the family of exclusively one biological man and one biological woman.

Right to Life is hopeful that the passing of this bill will help to inform Christopher Hipkins. In April 2023, then-Prime Minister Christopher Hipkins struggled to define "a woman" during a live radio interview, stating, "People define their own genders." When the question was posed, he initially paused and responded that the question "came slightly out of left field", eventually shifting the focus to self-identification and birth certificate processes.

It is important that those who we elect to govern us understand the fundamental truth that the definition of a woman is an adult biological female and that a man is an adult human biological male. It is disturbing that MPs from Labour, the Greens and the Maori Party are obsessed with a dangerous and false ideology that believes that we can choose our gender and fails to recognise the biological truth that has been upheld by our ancestors since the dawn of creation.

Every human being is a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God’s loving creation. It is our Creator Who gifts us with our gender, XX chromosomes for female and XY chromosomes for male. We should accept our biology with gratitude and humility.
