23/04/2024 Christchurch Press has obligation to public to publish latest Abortion Statistics

Right to Life has written again today to ask the editor of The Christchurch Press If they intend to publish the latest (2023) Abortion Statistics. No response has been received regarding the following letter.

23rd April 2024

Kamala Hayman,

Editor,

The Press

Dear Kamala,

Thank you for all that you are doing to ensure that our community is kept well informed.

I would be grateful if you would kindly advise me if you intend to publicise the provisional abortion statistics for New Zealand for 2023.

These important statistics were forwarded to The Press in a media release on 13th April 2024. I believe that these statistics have not been published. It is mentioned that I have also submitted a letter to The Press for publication containing these statistics, it was also not published.

I believe that it is in the public interest for the community to be aware of these important statistics concerning women’s health and our unborn children who are the weakest and most defenseless members of our human family. These statistics reveal that the most dangerous place for a New Zealander today is in its mother’s womb. For nearly every four children born one is killed before birth.

The community was told by the government that the passing of the Abortion Legislation Act in 2019 would not result in an increase in abortions, the reality is that there has been a 25% increase since the law was changed to make it no longer a crime to kill a child in the womb.

Referred for your information are the provisional statistics:-

“The Ministry of Health, in response to an Official Information Act request from Right to Life, advised that a provisional total of 16,214 innocent and defenseless unborn children were killed before birth in 2023. This was an increase of 2,050 abortions on the 14,164 abortions reported in 2022 of 14.6 per cent. The killing of these children and the wounding of their mothers was approved and funded by the government as a “health service.” The annual abortion services report is expected later this year.

It is estimated that 44 unborn children are killed every day in New Zealand, which equates to more than one and a half classrooms of school children.

The Ministry also advised that 10,043 abortions, 62 per cent of the total were early medical abortions.[EMA] This was an increase of 2,872 on the 7,171 [EMA] performed in 2023, which were 50.6 per cent of the total. These abortions were performed in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The unborn children were killed by starvation following the mother taking the lethal drug Mifepristone, followed by Misoprostol.”

Yours faithfully,
